Eagle Scout Training Helps Kent State Student Save a Life

Kent State Studentā€™s Heroic Acts Helps Save a Life

ŠćÉ«app freshman Josh Paulin is not only a good student, but an exemplary citizen.

On March 13, 2016, Paulin saved a manā€™s life, and now Kent Stateā€™s Department of Public Safety is honoring Paulin for his heroic acts.

It all started while he was waiting at a bus stop near the Kent Student Center Kiva. Paulin saw a man walk behind him, and then heard a loud thump. The man had collapsed.

ā€œSo I turned around and saw that he was on the ground unconscious,ā€ Paulin remembered.

Using his training as an Eagle Scout, Paulin kept the manā€™s airways open until paramedics arrived.

ā€œI rolled him over on his side, I took off my jacket and put it underneath his head because his head would have been leaning too far down,ā€ he said. ā€œI was worried about his neck.ā€

Paulinā€™s quick thinking helped the man regain consciousness. He even started breathing again.

Paulinā€™s heroic actions represent the core values of Kent State. As a result, Kent State Police Chief Dean Tondiglia presented Paulin with the Public Safety Citizenā€™s Award, alongside Jennifer Kulics, Kent Stateā€™s interim associate vice president and dean of students.

ā€œWe are so very proud that he would be that selfless,ā€ Kulics said. ā€œTo me, it shows that we truly have students who are undeniably Kent State.ā€

Paulin refuses to consider himself a hero. He said he just wanted to help.

ā€œI donā€™t want to be another bystander saying, ā€˜Oh, poor him,ā€™ and then walking off,ā€ Paulin said. ā€œI thought he would have done the same for me.ā€

Despite his training and skills, Paulin does not have any plans to enter the field of public safety. Paulin is an accounting major in Kent Stateā€™s College of Business and Administration.
