Danny Lyon examines his history as staff photographer for SNCC, the group of young activists that broke the back of Jim Crow in the early 1960s. This documentary features audio and photographs made inside the churches and mass meetings in the deep south at the height of the struggle, a work of extreme realism, that brings the viewer inside the revolutionary moments of 1963. The film features the final interviews of John Lewis and Julian Bond.

May 4 Film Series - Getting Straight

The dark comedy Getting Straight was released in the days following the Kent State shootings and, though it is fictional, the film’s plot points got very close to the reality that unfolded at Kent State and Jackson State. The film follows graduate student Harry Bailey, a former student activist, Vietnam War veteran, who returns to college to complete a master’s degree, but gets distracted by the protests on campus as he attempts to conform to the establishment in order to earn his teaching credentials and graduate.
