Vivian Hawk, ’24, is driven by her involvement in the Kent community and her passion for inspiring others. While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in paralegal studies and minors in Japanese and design at ��ɫapp, Vivian was also president of the Honors College Residential Engagement Council, participated in the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) allocations committee, was a member of the speech and debate team and contributed to Kent State’s TV2 Student Media.

As an academic coach at Kent State’s Academic Success Center, Vivian had the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates, providing support and motivation to help them achieve their academic goals. Her ability to foster a positive and productive learning environment helped students overcome challenges and succeed in their studies. This experience not only allowed her to make a significant impact on her peers, but it also enriched her own understanding of effective educational practices and student engagement.

“I am immensely proud of the hard work I have put into ensuring that my presence here at Kent State makes an impact on other people,” Vivian said.

Vivian’s mentor, Christopher P. Banks, J.D., Ph.D, political science professor and interim director of the Pre-Law Center, has supported her since their first meeting.

“I have known Vivian since 2021, and I learned right away that she is fully vested in Kent State, not only in spirit but also pride and tradition,” Banks said.

One of Vivian’s proudest moments at Kent State was founding the mock trial team and serving as its president. She recruited five undergraduate students interested in participating and, alongside Professor Banks, established the now flourishing team with an initial budget of $1,000. Vivian strived to create a space where its members could learn public speaking, critical thinking and find community within professional experiences.

“There is no doubt that she has been a positive role model for her peers and, quite frankly, for me as well as I learned plenty about what it takes to begin, manage and perform a mock trial team – something Kent State has done over the years, but Vivian’s contributions and many sacrifices of her time have helped to take it to the next level,” Banks said.

Graduating summa cum laude with a 3.9 GPA, Vivian earned a place on both the Dean’s and President’s Lists, reflecting her dedication to her rigorous programs and capability to balance her academic responsibilities with her leadership roles on campus. As she moves forward, her past successes and experiences will undoubtedly continue to propel her toward new heights.

“I am driven to make a positive impact on the generations that will come after me. As a woman in the legal field, I hope to inspire more women to get engaged in the profession and take on leadership positions,” Vivian said.
